The diary entry of Lieutenant John Barker is unlikely to be untrue, because of the fact that he is writing it to himself. The report written by Major Pitcairn also points towards the colonists. The similarities between these two documents along with fact that the colonists would be extremely nervous, it is clear that the colonists wee the ones to fire first.
