Alienation means an estrangement; a diversion to another purpose, mental derangement. In other words, to alienate someone means to seclude or isolate someone from a society. This term fits Grendel perfectly. Throughout the book, Grendel is perceived as a vicious monster according to the townsmen who are trying to kill him. He is alienated from Hrothgar’s mead hall. That is the place where Hrothgar and his followers meet for everything.

…showed last 75 words of 353 total…states in the book that he had many imaginary friends as a young child and would play with them until dawn, when he had to be home. If someone never interacts with others during there young childhood years, that puts a difficult task on the person to make up for lost time when they get older. Since Grendel did not communicate throughout his young years with his mother, he has a hard time communicating now
