An exoskeleton is practical for a small creature like an ant, however, if a creature the size of a tiger were to have an exoskeleton it wouldn't be able to lift it's own bodyweight and would crush itself. Thus I find that the skeletal systems of an ant and a tiger are completely different, however each serve their purpose to the user very well, for they would be useless without it.
