Setting Setting is an essential ingredient to any story or literary work. In some however it is not only essential but it also plays a vital role in the development of the plot. The three works of “August 2002: A Night’s Meeting,” “The Great Gatsby,” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” all depict how important a particular setting is to the success of a story. If the authors had altered the setting just a tiny bit we may have not received the full appreciation that these works deserve.
