Some of the most influential attributes that contribute to the quality of the essay are the type of language, the connotation, and the slanting or lack there of. In the case of “A Proposal to Abolish Grading” the author, Paul Goodman uses words and phrases such as: “naïve teacher,” and “ugly competition,” “overseer, ” “…showed first 75 words of 322 total…

…showed last 75 words of 322 total…finally lose themselves in it.” Goodman appeals to his intended student audience also by using words such as “master,” “overseer,” and “lord” to refer to teachers. By doing this, he makes his concept to abolish grading seem like less of an education reform concept and more of a rebellion of the oppressed against the oppressors.
