Abstract
This paper describes deficiencies in regard to the proper evacuation of aircraft. Since the late 60’s the
airliners have been evacuating aircraft in the same manner they are today. The old technology of evacuating
aircraft needs to be updated in the areas of evacuation slides, over-wing exits, and passenger education. It
is known fact that many passengers are still alive after most survivable and minor accidents, but end up
perishing due to improper evacuation

well-
trained emergency response personnel (airport rescue and fire-fighting) - all working together to get
passengers out as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately, the issues being discussed aren't new. Some were discussed in reports dating back to
1968. It's time the FAA, the manufacturers, the airlines, the aircraft crews, and the airports take action to
ensure that no one else dies because of poor aircraft design; inadequate evacuation procedures; inadequate
crew training; or inadequate emergency response."(NTSB)
