A number of plays were published during his lifetime, but none of the original dramatic manuscripts has survived. William Shakespeare died in April 23rd 1616, on his 52nd birthday, of unknown causes. Shakespeare wrote comedies, historical plays, tragedies and poems. In all 37 plays and 145 sonnets. By the most famous are Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet.
