Tyrosine Kinases

Introduction In this experiment we will determine whether or not epidermal growth factors (EGF) stimulate target cells, through the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) (3). RTK’s are transmembrane proteins that receive an extra cellular message, and transform it into an intracellular message. When inactive the RTK’s reside as monomers in the lipid bylayer of the cell, until they are dimerized (2). At the same time of this dimerization the RTK then binds its ligand, EGF is …showed first 75 words of 850 total

The orthovanadate did not work properly and the tyrosines were dephosphorylated. Since the Pg 4 cells were originally serum starved to cause a low level of phosphorylation prior to the experiment; the cells could have been damaged. A number of things could have happened to the RTK’s to either not allow them to bind ligand or not autophosphorylate.
