Things Fall Apart
All parents subconsciously want the best for their children, but not all parents express this common desire in the same way. Conflicts often times arise when what a parent wants for their child does not match what the child wants for themselves. Okonkwo’s relationship with his son, Nwoye, in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart is a perfect example of this.

one of the reasons why Chinua Achebe wrote the novel in the first place, only Achebe’s message is on a much larger scale than just a father-son relationship. Achebe wrote this novel in order to show the western world that Africa has its own distinct culture and heritage, and he uses the conflict between Okonkwo and Nwoye to symbolize the real life conflict of the western world’s culture (Okonkwo) and African culture (Nwoye).
