Things Fall Apart Essay
In “Things Fall Apart” by Achebe, he shows the true culture and traditions of the Africans before European Colonization. He portrays the real complexity of their lives in every aspect of their society from kinship, religion, marriage, and even government. Achebe emphasizes the harmony and uniqueness of the Igbo culture and contradicts the stereotypical European representations of the Africans as barbarians.

Igbo’s beliefs of peaceful relations. The Igbo tribes would always consult the Oracle, or their ancestors before declaring war because they feared punishment from their gods. Religion not only emphasizes peace for the Igbo’s but also emphasizes an individuals obligation to the community. For Instance, when Okonkwo breaks the Week of Peace by beating his youngest wife he not only breaks a law of the tribe, but breaks many religious rules as well.
