Theodore Roosevelt was known as the "Accidental President" because he took office when President William McKinley suddenly died in September 1901. At forty-two years old, he was at that time the youngest man to ever assume the presidency.

Roosevelt summoned his supporters back to Chicago in August for another convention, this one to launch the new Progressive Party and nominate himself as it's presidential candidate. Roosevelt approached the battle feeling, as he put it, "fit as a bull moose", thus giving his new party an enduring nickname, The Bull Moose Party.
