Perhaps alcoholics, and addicts in general, taste that first beer every time. Maybe they are constantly in search of that first beer as often as possible. There is something that keeps them going, much like Neddy uncontrollably taking one more swim, they are always willing to have one more round, faithfully prolonging their own pain.
