Narrative voice

Peculiarity of narrative voice is that Santiago’s thoughts given as direct monologues - narrator does not provide explanation, his own interpretation, of what happening with the character. Letting a reader himself built more intimate relations with the hero. The whole text is pure narration without any insertion of author’s meditations.

The book is symbolic drama, parable (for life itself). It seems more like an extended poem or a fable. This adds to the novel more lyrical, poetic and creative mood alluding to the philosophical, timeless nature of issues considered. In other words, slow pace of narration is like careful thinking, which the author encourages us to perform.
