Reportedly, director Jack Clayton did not let Stephens or Franklin read the entire script, as the movie carries some extremely disturbing undertones. Instead, Clayton let the children approach each day of shooting as a new adventure, without revealing the intention of some of the scenes (e.g., the scene in which a presumably possessed Stephens kisses Kerr passionately).
