The Death of Jocasta

Sophocles' "Oedipus Rex" is the epitome of Greek tragedy. The play displays a kingly character, Oedipus, who through his character flaw meets his catastrophic fate. The story relates everything a Greek tragedy should have, but it leaves many pieces unresolved and the minor characters do not receive any explanations for their actions. Although Oedipus is the main character, Jocasta's life ends tragically as well for many different reasons. She kills herself because she can no longer live with the fate set out for her and her beloved Oedipus. She realizes that you cannot cheat destiny set out by the gods. Oedipus Rex, though somewhat upsetting, will continue to provide a great example into Greek tragedy.
