The Crucible Essay
“Better hang innocent people than weaken the state.” --Danforth
The Crucible was a play written by Arthur Miller which was based on the Salem
witch trials. When witchcraft hysteria hits Salem, neighbor turns against neighbor and
rivals see a chance to beat their opponents through claims of witchery. Judges are
brought to Salem to watch over the trials where the witches were made to confess.

numbers of innocent people that have been killed to appease the members of the society
in which they lived. Danforth probably thought that the death of innocent people would
be a necessity in the quest to purge the Devil from Salem. It was believed that for the
better of the community, innocent people must be sacrificed.
