The Aztec are named form the word Aztlan meaning “White Land” or “Place of the Herons”. They had many other names. They were called the Tenochca and the Mexica. The Aztec called to themselves as Culhua – Mexica. Nahuatl was the language they spoke and are still spoken in central Mexico.

Relations beween Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco came to a crisis in 1473. Axaayacatl, king of Tenochtlitlan Tlatelolco. Moquiuix, the Tlatelolcan king was killed or committed suicide. After that the Tlatelolco was administered through governors under the control of Tenochtitlan.
In 1519 Herman Cortes arrived. In 1521 the Spaniards and their Indian allies attacked the towns. The Aztecs made their last resistance in Tlatelolco. The conquistadors founded Mexico City on the debris of the twin towns.
