“Sweat” The play “Sweat” is based on an excerpt from a story written by Zora Neale Hurston. The play takes place in Florida during the 1920’s. In the play, Hurston explores many issues facing black families at that time. The main character Delia faces numerous conflicts imposed upon her by her husband. Hurston does however, give the reader some satisfaction because Sykes’ death comes through divine intervention and Delia’s soul is safe from eternal damnation. Miraculously Delia’s soul is still safe despite the marital conflict, which is a major theme of this play.
