It is at this point that Govinda realizes that he is talking to his friend, he asks the simple question "Are you Siddhartha?" and the ferryman replies in the affirmative. The end of the conversation that followed Govinda left Govinda mystified and he was uncertain as to whether it had actually taken place or not, he was unable to differentiate between reality and fiction.
