African American’s suffered from racism and segregation. According to World Book Encyclopedia the Jim Crow laws, was developed by Northern states in the 1800's, but was adopted by the Southern states in the late 1800’s. These segregation laws required that whites and blacks use separate public facilities. No detail was too small. At one time Oklahoma required that whites and blacks use separate telephone booths.
