The Reconstruction Era was a time when the Radical Republicans had control of the country. It began in 1865, just after the Civil War, and ended in 1877. The goals of Reconstruction were to bring the south back into the union and decide what to do to provide equality for all the freed slaves. Reconstruction gave blacks citizenship, but it allowed Black Codes and Jim Crow laws to be established.
