Sonnet 73 develops the theme of aging and death through richly eloquent imagery condensed into a tightly packed form. The love between Shakespeare and his ward, to who the poem is dedicated, is closely demonstrated throughout the poem and finalised with the final epigram.

As it is Shakespeare speaking to his ward he is declaring what the ward must perceive of him. 'In me thou see'st…' is repeated twice. Yet he respects and is comforted by his ward's unrelenting love.
Through his rich imagery to describe the abstract feelings of aging we are drawn into Shakespeare's feelings, patient of death, which is to become of us all.
