Like Martin Luther King Jr. had said in his I Have A Dream speech: “…and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.” Steinbeck, too was trying to help put an end to segregation along with other problems in U.S. society by showing the pain and loneliness of his characters.
