They are not being straight with each other. They are talking on the surface, but what they are really saying to one another is below that surface. Instead of listening to what is being said maybe they should look at what is not being expressed. Their relationship will never flourish and grow if this continues to happen and if their true feelings are not vocalized. Whatever they decide, the decision will hurt one of them.
