Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by the people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. As a result of these differences two totally different types of people formed in New England and in the Chesapeake region. New Englanders were faithful followers of the teachings of their church, and the southerners became independent citizens, with the ability to organize and the will to fight to get what they wanted.
