It was an immediate success, and was overwhelmed by more students than the school could accommodate for. Lyon headed the organization for twelve years, which was until her death in 1849. For more than 150 years, Mt. Holyoke has empowered women for serious intellectual pursuits, public leadership and service to humanity, as its founder envisioned.
