The 1st Industrial Revolution occurred during the mid 1800’s. It was defined as the era of Industrial Capitalism. Economic life, in this period, began with very few wage-earning employment opportunities and had the majority of families involved in subsistence farm work. Along side these means for survival, existed few, independently owned craft shops, run by skilled, white artisans, journeymen and their apprentices. Unionization, though chaotic at times, kept the needed distinction between laborers and capitalists, and helped to shape today’s labor morale and legislations. Although society continues to battle against itself for an increase in labor rights, the democracy for which it stands will only encourage more change. In factories today, the new technology of computers, for precision and efficiency, may just be the next Industrial Revolution.
