hero, the protagonist is seen in a unique light. He is hurtful towards his mother when he tells her he doesn’t love her, but in actuality, he cant even love himself because he is still nourishing his “wound” of war, his soul. Though Krebs would seem to be an unlikable character because of this, the audience ends up feeling sorry for this All-American boy who lost his innocence and religion because of the war.
