King Lear - Relationship Between Sub-Plot and the Main-Plot
William Shakespeare’s play King Lear comprises of two complex yet thematically similar plots. He has used the characters and themes of the subplot to amplify the drama and calamity of the main plot. Through the tribulations of Edgar, the cruelty of Edmund and the suffering of Gloucester we will see a connection between their plot, and the main plot and its characters.

The sub-plot is extremely similar to the main-plot and it does amplify the main plot as you can see the struggles of Lear and Gloucester relate to each other. Gloucester’s problems are awful but when you look upon the main plot you see that Lear’s problems are appalling. Shakespeare has successfully enabled the sub-plot to overlap and strengthen the main-plot through use of continuous themes apparent in both plots.
