Joseph discovered oxygen in 1774 with the help of Carl Scheele of Sweden. They called this gas dephlogisticated air, which was later named oxygen by Antoine Lavoisier. Joseph proved that oxygen was essential to combustion. He discovered that sparkling beverages and baths were simply water containing fixed air. His achievements won the Copley Medal for the Royal Society. Carbonated beverages that we drink today are traced back to Joseph’s experiments.
