Leo Tolstoy conveys through Ivan’s death, that society must change its ways before it’s to late. The individuals of any society are not protected from the horrors of life no matter how perfect and appropriate one lives. Ivan learns this lesson to late for he lost his life for the sake of propriety. It is the hope of Tolstoy that this won’t be the case for the rest of us.
