Following this transition from authoritarian monarchy to democratic republic, Weimar Germany immediately began to display weaknesses that it would ultimately never fix. However, in August 1934 this barrier was removed when Hindenburg died of old age. The office of president was abolished and combined with the chancellorship. Only eighteen months after becoming chancellor, Hitler was able to proclaim himself 'Fuhrer' making him legal dictator of Germany.
