With the help of Franz Von Papen, a crafty but not very intelligent right-wing nobleman, Hitler became chancellor in January 1933, with Von Papen as vice-chancellor. Hitler had succeeded in using the Treaty of Versailles to attack and undermine the government, and was now in a position to seize more power and destroy the Weimar government.
