Heathcliff’s life has revolved around two centers which can be viewed much like the eastern symbol Ying and Yang; that is, the intertwining of his unrequited love for Catherine and his obsession with revenge. In the end he finds he cannot achieve the first and no longer wants to achieve the second. Without vengeance to fill his life, Heathcliff finally sees his life as the vicious, empty shell it has become.
