Through desperation, Iona tells all of his sorrow to his horse, because no one else would listen to him. This ending ultimately shows that the only member of Iona’s society that shows compassion is not even human. Therefore the two main themes of this story are loneliness and the lack of compassion shown by Iona’s society.
