Despite the victory at Cannae and the efforts of Hannibal, Carthage was defeated by Rome in the second Punic War. After a second defeat, Carthage slowly fell apart. Islands and interests were lost, and the people had no unity. Livy's statement regarding Rome, "No other nation could have suffered such a tremendous disaster and not been destroyed" had been proven true-Carthage was now in shambles, slowly crumbling.
