In the early 1980’s the Supreme Court heard a case on this topic. The town of Morton Grove, Illinois had passed an ordinance making it illegal to possess handguns, except for the police and military. The town was sued under the second amendment, and he court decided that the ordinance was valid, and that there was no individual right to bear arms stated in the second amendment.
