Grant cut off his last avenue to escape. With no food, and half his soldiers too weak to
hold a weapon, Lee was forced to surrender.
On April 9th, when Lee and Grant met in the house of Mr. McLean, Grant issued his most
generous surrender terms in history: the defeated soldiers were to lay down their arms
and go home.
