The events in “Oedipus the King,” written by Sophocles show an essential relationship of man’s free will versus man’s fate. The Greeks believed, man was free to choose between the both, but was ultimately held responsible for his own actions. Therefore the last act of destruction was caused by Oedipus’ free will, but his tragic fate came about because the old Greek way of thinking that ever sin must be punished. With that said in mind the chorus ends the story making it known that the only way you would live, with happiness and without misfortune is if you obey and have undoubtful respect towards the gods.
