As part of traditional cultural practices, between twenty and ninety-four million
African females (and an unknown number of Indonesian and Malaysian), mostly young
girls, undergo some form of genital removal every year. This procedure is called

These are attitudes which can only widen the gap between the Western
feminist movement and that of the Third World.
On the question of traditional practices like genital mutilation, African women
must no longer equivocate or react only to Western interference. They must speak out in
favor of the total era-diction of all these practices, and they must lead information and
education campaigns to end this within their own countries and on a continental level.
