We can see that when he is encouraged to go to Mabel and he says: Well, I hope she hasn't changed her mind. It's nearly twenty minutes since I saw her last, whereas when he sees Mabel we understand it is just irony because he says Darling! and kisses her, something which makes us understand that he is quite sure of her feelings.
