Everyman and Today's Morality
In the medieval morality play Everyman, the underlying theme is “all thing faileth, Save God alone.”(231, l. 841) This theme was meant to be a spiritual lesson to teach people a better way to live their lives. While certainly not a modern play, Everyman’s lessons are still very useful in modern times. The characters of Beauty, Goods, Good Deeds and Everyman himself are still very prevalent characters in today’s society, and the morals they demonstrated are universal. Though they were written for a culture that has changed quite a bit since medieval times, they are important in modern culture as they were then.
