In a time of no forks, many spices, and wooden plates, the people of the middle ages loved their food. To them food and drink were not only a necessary part of life but also a form of entertainment and a good excuse to get together and socialize.

The basic ingredients to this "meal-in-a-bowl" (Hinds) is sprouted barley grains, peas, salted pork or bacon, onion, garlic, and they also tossed in whatever they happened to be growing in their garden.
So as they say in the middle ages, eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may die.
