Determination of a Chemical Formula
Determination of a Chemical Formula
Purpose: To determine the chemical formula of the unknown hydrated copper chloride.
Materials: - Crucible
- Analytical balance
- Hydrated copper chloride
- Hot plate
- 100-ml beaker
- Aluminum Wire
- 6M HCL
- Buchner Funnel
- 95% ethanol
- Filter paper
- Stirring Rod
Procedure: 1) Weigh a dry crucible onto the analytical balance and record data.
2) Place about 1 gram of hydrated copper chloride into the crucible.
3) Place the crucible w/ hydrated copper chloride onto the hot plate.
4) Gently stir all

water and chloride. By doing this, the chemical formula of the unknown hydrated copper chloride was determined.
Some errors that could’ve altered the results of the experiment include: too much hydrated copper chloride, the brown crystals rehydrated, not all of the copper from the aluminum wire was scraped off, and the copper not cooling to room temperature. These errors could’ve played an important role on whether or not the chemical formula is correct.
