Dante and Politics
Dante Aligheri was a very well known and influential poet in early literature. Dante was born in
Florence in 1265, into the Gulf political system (Both 7). The Gulfs were aristocrats and nobles.
They supported the papacy and were against the Renaissance. In his early years Dante was not
politically active. Dante eventually rose to become a political figure in the government of
Florence. His life examples are what helped shaped his views on politics and religion.

unless he was granted full dignity and honor. He spent the last days of his life in exile in Ravenna,
where he died on September 13 or 14, 1321. His remains have been kept their despite requests
over the centuries for his return to Florence. There is a cenotaph, which is an empty tomb
honoring someone who’s remains are somewhere else, in the Church of Santa Croce in Florence,
Italy.
