Pygmalion, a humorous yet rather “harsh” romantic story by G.B. Shaw, in my opinion, is a modernized Cinderella story with a twisted yet realistic ending. Supporting this would be the “rags to riches” element. Eliza, the Cinderella of the story, is a poor, uneducated, flower girl, not too far from an under appreciated servant. It hints that Eliza could indeed have feelings for him, yet won’t reveal them because she demands respect that she can’t be given. Although it’s not a “part by part” similarity to the Cinderella fairy tale, Pygmalion does show the events in the story to a point making it the most harshly realistic “.. and they lived happily ever after” story I’ve ever read.
