Chapter One
It is morning. Kino awakens. Juana is already awake and looking at her Husband. They eat, drink, and do other things in their normal routine. Kino sees a scorpion on the ropes that hold up his son's, Coyotito's, crib. Kino tries to stop the scorpion but the baby shakes the ropes and the scorpion falls on the baby and stings him. Kino kills the scorpion and Juana tries to suck out the poison.

the idea. Kino sneaks off and tries to surprise the trackers that night. Coyotito lets out a cry, and the trackers hear it. They do not know what it is but decides to shoot it anyway. The tracker with the riffle shoots. Then Kino jumps out and kills all of the trackers. He finds out that Coyotito was killed. Kino and Juana go home, carrying their dead son. Kino throws the pearl into the ocean.
