the struggling Loman. Caulfield, however, represents an exiled youth searching to find meaning and direction in his life. Even though Salinger creates a character whose behavior is extreme and not condonable and whose his attitudes may be considered dated, they reflect a world filled with isolation and frustration – a world that is still present today. Therefore, I believe The Catcher in the Rye must be read, re-read, and understood by all, and not be banned.
