The Catcher in the Rye Since its original publication in 1945, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye has been subjected to much controversy concerning its vulgar and profane content. According to Herbert N. Foerstel’s Banned in the U.S.A., Salinger’s book ranks third on the list of books most frequently banned by schools and public libraries. …showed last 75 words of 1555 total…the struggling Loman. Caulfield, however, represents an exiled youth searching to find meaning and direction in his life. Even though Salinger creates a character whose behavior is extreme and not condonable and whose his attitudes may be considered dated, they reflect a world filled with isolation and frustration – a world that is still present today. Therefore, I believe The Catcher in the Rye must be read, re-read, and understood by all, and not be banned.
