Toomer thoroughly describes the struggle and suffering of women in an unmatched clear and poetic manner; moreover, he presents this by putting their lives on paper and exposing the realties of the lives of Karintha, Becky, Carma, and Fern. Although Toomer gives each character their individual idiosyncrasy they all are relatively the same.
