I guess it helped Mays that Robinson not only broke the color barrier in baseball, but the New York color barrier in baseball as well. If people weren’t convinced blacks would be able to succeed in baseball after Jackie Robinson, they surely wouldn’t be able to put up a valid argument after Willie Mays.
